As the temperature drops and the nights draw in, it’s important to make sure your outdoor spaces are ready to withstand the challenges of the colder months. At Maple Plastics, we know that composite decking is designed to be durable, low maintenance and weather resistant. With a little seasonal care, you can keep it looking its best year after year.
Here’s our expert guide on how to protect and maintain your composite decking throughout the winter.
Give Your Decking a Thorough Clean
Before the frost sets in, give your decking a good clean. Start by sweeping away any leaves, dirt or debris that could trap moisture or encourage mould growth.
Next, wash the boards with warm soapy water and a soft-bristle brush or use a composite decking cleaner for a deeper refresh. Avoid using harsh chemicals or wire brushes as these can damage the surface.
For stubborn stains or algae, a pressure washer can be used, but always on a low setting (no more than 1500 PSI) and keep the nozzle at least 20cm from the surface to prevent damage.
Check and Clear Gaps Between Boards
Composite decking is designed with small gaps between boards to allow water drainage and airflow. During autumn, it’s common for leaves or dirt to get stuck in these spaces.
Use a thin tool or putty knife to gently clear out debris. Keeping these gaps open helps prevent water pooling and freezing which could cause unnecessary strain on your decking structure during colder spells.
Avoid Standing Water and Ice Build-Up
While composite decking is resistant to moisture, standing water and ice can make the surface slippery and affect longevity over time.
If you notice areas where water tends to pool, brush it away after heavy rain or snow. When temperatures drop below freezing, avoid using metal shovels or sharp tools to remove ice as they can scratch the surface.
Instead, use a plastic shovel or a soft broom, and sprinkle calcium chloride or rock salt to melt ice safely. Both options are suitable for composite decking materials.
Protect Your Furniture and Accessories
Outdoor furniture, pots and planters can trap moisture underneath if left in one place all winter. Move them around or, better yet, store them indoors to avoid marking or discolouration on your decking.
If you’re leaving items outside, consider using rubber pads or outdoor mats underneath legs and bases. Avoid mats with rubber backing as these can sometimes stain composite surfaces.
Inspect and Maintain the Structure
Winter is a great time to check the structural integrity of your decking. Look for loose boards, wobbly railings or any screws that need tightening.
Composite decking doesn’t rot or splinter like timber but ensuring your subframe and fixings are in good shape will help your deck remain strong and safe for years to come.
Plan for Spring
Finally, take this opportunity to plan any upgrades or additions you’d like to make once warmer weather returns. This could include new furniture, lighting or even an extension.
A little forward planning now will mean you’re ready to enjoy your outdoor space the moment the first spring sunshine arrives.
Composite decking from Maple Plastics is built to withstand the elements. With a touch of winter care, you can maintain its beauty, safety and performance. With just a few simple steps, you can protect your investment and enjoy your outdoor space all year round.
